За останні десятиліття забруднення повітря стало справжньою загрозою для життя та здоров’я населення у всьому світі. На сьогодні близько 92% населення в світі проживає в районах з низькими стандартами якості повітря. Зокрема, в Індії забруднення повітря стає однією з основних причин захворювання респіраторними та алергічними захворюваннями, астмою, появи хронічної обструктивної хвороби легень, пневмонії та, навіть, туберкульозу. Метою даного дослідження є аналіз ступеня поширення хвороб дихальної системи у людей, які проживають поряд із промисловим районом по виготовленню шкіряних виробів в місті Джамау в Канпурі (Індія). Джерелом інформації є міжсекторальне опитування чоловіків-робітників з району Джамау, для якого використано триетапну модель вибірки. Об’єктом дослідження обрано райони Буджіята, Мотінагара та Ашарфабада із-за високої концентрації населення, зайнятого на заводах по переробці шкіри. У процесі дослідження автори використовували одно- та двовимірні статистичні дані. Проведене дослідження засвідчило відсутність основних благ цивілізації в досліджуваних районах: житла, води, гігієни та санітарії, переробки відходів тощо. Виявлено, що за останні 12 місяців 11% населення вищезазначеної території відчували такі симптоми як хрипи або свист у грудях у будь-який час доби, тобто постійно, а ще 9% населення прокидалися від почуття стиснення у грудях у попередні 12 місяців. За період дослідження у 10% респондентів не менше ніж за три місяці до обстеження вдень або вночі спостерігалося відкашлювання мокротинням. Стрімке розповсюдження різноманитніх хвороб дихальної системи ймовірно може бути пов’язане із більш високим рівнем забруднення повітря. В статті представлено рекомендації авторів щодо дотримання принципів справедливої промислової діяльності в рамках корпоративної соціальної відповідальності та сприяння сталому розвитку територій.
